Tim Mcgee
Intro By Beaver Beavs

When I met this kid years ago on the polo courts, he was a young little smiley grom. Tim killed it at polo and now he’s grown up a little to step up to the velodrome. He was already pretty quick but riding with the Predator Cycling team as well as the is making him faster and faster. Within a year of racing on the velodrome, Tim has already upgraded to CAT2 on track and CAT3 on the road and now he’s training with the fastest dudes in the country on Team USA. But as he moves up in the racing world, Tim’s still just as down-to-earth as ever. He’s still shootin’ around on the polo courts and If you ever meet him, you’d feel like you’ve known this kid for years. One of the best dudes around and he’s always down for a big smile and a good laugh.

Robert Pacheco
The Lil’ homie. The dude that kicks my ass on our track bike ride every Saturday morning. I watched this young man grow into a cyclist over the last two years and he has impressed the shit out of me. He’s getting ready to throw his first race next Sunday, (1st LA halloween alleycat in quite some time), and he hosts his own ride – Tuesday night hustle ride. Robert is holding it down on the LA streets and you all should keep an eye on him. This kid is a pleasure to ride with and it’s going to be real exciting to see over the next few years what this young man has hidden up his sleeve.

HELL YEAH. Was hit by a car in September NOT wearing one, all bad. Our drivers are too stupid for cyclists not to wear one.

Dope chill spot?
Don’t really chill to often. As long as im with friends doesnt really matter really.

Be Aggressive, there’s no other way to ride in LA. You must be aggressive or you will not survive. People wont give you the lane, you must take it. DO NOT HESITATE!

Melissa! Mouse! Rest in Paradise! one of the greatest people I ever had a chance to meet. First female messenger I met.
TOLA!

Last word?
A fixed gear is a bicycle at its purest form. no gears and no brakes. Considered the ultimate marriage between man and machine, a sub 20 pound piece of machinery is the only thing separating your body from the hard concrete.
Be aggressive, dont hesitate, dont be scared.
Search for the hills and you will find you dont need to go to San Francisco to bomb some hills!

Steven Tortorelli
Let me start this off by saying Steve is one of the more genuine people I have met in a long time, super positive guy. It might be just his youth, but I hope he stays optimistic and doesn’t turn in to a Cynic like most of us.

I mean come on, the kid was on his way to visit his parents right after we shot the photos for this interview. Who wouldn’t like the guy?

Peep that yung profile below and Happy 2 year anniversary TCB Courier!

what do you ride?

My whips include
Track- 2009 and 2011 Mash Cinelli Bolt, 90′s Nagasawa, 2006 Surly Steamroller
Road- 2007 Specialized s-works tarmac(for competitive racing), 2000 something Waterford
Cross- 2008 Specialized Tri-Cross

How long have you been riding/ what started you?
Ive been riding since 2005. I started working at REI in SF and a co-worker had told me after i bought the Steamroller that i was going to be like all the other hipsters and buy a fixed gear then give it up..Five years later im still going strong! No longer working at REI though..

Do you wear a helmet and why or why not?
I always wear a helmet! Its stupid to not wear one! One car can change the whole game of riding and life. Ive knows too many people that have gotten in accidents for doing stupid ish in traffic or just not having enough riding experience. I guess its the uncool thing to do because wearing a fitted cap is 100 times better looking that something that will protect your brain?

Favorite Shop? Why?

Favorite shop is a toss up between MASH and Pedal Revolution. The guys that work at Ped Rev are really down to earth and its a chill atmosphere. Also they’re the main sponsor for Team Chica Sexy (The competitive race team for Road and Track). And the MASH store I always have a good laugh with Mike, Al and Dylan.

Clip or clipless?

Clipless and Cages for sure!! When I race alleycats I usually go Clipless just for that extra jump. But I do like the safety of cages for skidding when I really need to. And for a more comfortable ride also. On the Steamroller I have some re-load tarking straps which are a different feel but still help to get the job done.

Ride with headphones/ music?
When I work I keep one headphone in just to hear traffic. I think that’s the law, right? I dunno, I think its stupid to see kids disconnected from the world when riding and not being able to listen to the things happening around them. That’s just me though..Get some YDM if your sour aboot it. I like old school Hip-Hop and alot of new stuff too Lil Wayne and the new Jay-Z album have been keeping me going. I do visit Hype-Trak every morning. I also listen to a good amount of oldies too.

Sponsors or teams/ gangs/ clubs you are a part of?
MASH, Team Chica Sexy, Team Murder and POMB are the peeps that keep me going on the racing tip. And Thee Shredderz Krew.

Fav. Race?

Favorite race…hhmm It has to be QCR (Quake City Rumble). Its the biggest race that SF throws every year and it always has a really good turn out of messengers and non-messengers. Its just a great weekend because there are parties every night with alot of free PBR and friends to share in the scumbaggery and good times.

Fav. place to ride or route(s) in SF?
I love myself a good ol fashion city loop. The city is only 7×7 so usually a down and back loop is good enough. Plenty of hills and flats to go around. I grew up in the Sunset so riding through that part of town is always chill for me.

Fav. person(s) to ride with?

Peeps that make riding fun have to be the OG POMB crew. Non POMB affiliates though would be thee Ferg Dawg and the other Chica Sexy dudes, Hernan and the DTLA dudes, Trev Dawg, Chas, Walton, Kyle. Also anyone with TCB Courier except for Jeremy hes a ginger but Sean Martin is cool id ride with him any day. Oh and Beaver Beavs only because he knows bad ass strippers. And you too Joseph.

Dope Chill spot?

Chillest spot has to be my ladies crib. But MASH Transit would be the second place because they have a mini fridge stocked with mexican Coca-Cola and coconut waters. Oh and good people hang out there too!

Why SF?

Why not SF?! Ha! I grew up here its my jam and i dont really see myself leaving for anywhere else anytime soon. The riding is really chill but competitive when it needs to be and everyone has a good vibe. It isn’t LA but I love the weather here. The hottest it gets is high 80s sometimes mid 90s and I’m cool with that.

What do you do for work?

I work Full time for TCB Courier (Taking Care of Business). I am the SoMA Manager these days and its been alot of work to get my side of the company to where its at meow. Its a really gravy job but watch out SF were spreading!

What else do you do/ projects/ hobbies?
I really enjoy watching spaghetti westerns and old school samurai movies. Graffiti is cool. Im a HUGE Samurai Champloo fan also Cow Boy Bee Bop. So i guess sitting on my butt watching movies/ cartoons would be my jam for this question.

Dream Bike?
My dream bike is any bike i cant and will never be able to own! ha Full carbon everything sram red from head to toe hella kitty deep dish rims on any 4000 $ whip sounds like a dream come true for track road or cross..aww man well now my keyboard is sticky thanks Joe.

Best/ worst about riding in SF?
Best part are the cutty lines you can find to get from one part of the city to the other real quick! Worst part of riding in the city are the commuters. A lot of them are afraid of their own shadows when they ride. I’m not really into the “Big boy gear” riding. If you ride a stupid big track gear in SF your asking to get hurt. Track gearing is meant for THE TRACK. And a lot of the peeps out there have never experienced what their bikes can really do unless they get out to the track and see what a 59×11 can do when you really try…Ha! I don’t think anyone really rides a 59×11 but your picking up what I’m throwing down right?

Any SF secrets/ tips you want to give out?

Loose lips sink ships Saul. SF secrets are SF secrets. Tips are be aware of whats around you when riding in SF, or anywhere for that matter!

Shout outs?
Shout oots to Paul and Saul Upinya, erryone with MASH, all my peeps in Berlin, Basil, and Milan. My girlfriend that wont be reading this.. Ha! umm The Tortorelli family and your mother.

Last word
Be uncool wear a helmet and Rubber side down…. IM OOT!

we will being doing rider profiles of the riders from the film. First up from SF, is my homie Ryan!
I met this dude at the Red Bull event, and we hit it off. “You like bikes, I like bikes” that kind of shit, that

How did you get involved in the film:: Through my friend Johnny Lee, check him out in the film!

What was your filming experience like:: It was great! Never really done anything like it so it was a bit nerve racking.

Any sketchy moments:: YES! It was at the top of twin peaks, it was the first day i threw on that particular pedal (Shimano clipless MTB pedals and sidi dom5) setup on my bike. As we started to ride down, I felt my left foot have a bit of play. i decided to keep going. Once we picked up some speed, went for a skid to control my speed then POP! My left foot disengaged from the pedal and threw me up from the saddle. Quickly threw that foot on the rear tire and shredded a part of the shoe away.

*Alex i hope you threw that in the film*

What bike did you ride for your part? (list everything if you want)::
Broakland StreetFighter
and a loaner bike ;)

Do think this will be a good represention of our cities and how we ride them:: Yeah, go see the film!

Best thing for an out of town rider to do in your city while visiting:: Climb some hills

Shout outs:: Everyone that was involved in the making of this film.

Jon Budinoff

About a year ago, I threw the second installment of my race “The Lord of Griffith”. I set the racers off on their way.
After the first lap, a shirtless fellow was leading the race, same on the 2nd lap. I was blown away, and was like who
is this shirtless guy? Thus Shirtless Jon was born. He always comes out to race, and is one of the loudest guys out there.
Super fast, and he can really make the bike move. I’m impressed with how fast he has taken to the bike,
and it’s always a pleasure to see him out there racing. I want to see him kill LOG lll this year.

Jon Budinoff

What do you ride?
Super Pista track bike, 2009 Specialized Tarmac SL Pro, and I’m trying to get my Stratos track frame back on the road for pure lurking.

How long have you been riding/ what started you?
I first learned about fixed gear bikes in 2006/2007 when a “how to build/ride your own fixie gear guide booklet thingy as long as your wearing Puma’s” fell out of a Vice magazine. I was intrigued for sure, then one day my friend brought his track bike to our local skateboard spot in Tompkins Sqare Park and did a skid. I was like holy shee!!! So I bought a Fuji Track bike and went riding around trying to learn to skid. Could’nt figure it out, then some junkie told me that it would be easy to learn how to skid if the ground was wet and to go out and practice in the rain. He was right. But I was still a total poser though, especially cuz I wasn’t a hardcore messenger. I went into Trackstar once and asked about the ubiquitous Bianchi Pista and mispronounced Bianchi like” bee- on – shay” they were all like what a LOSER.

Fast forward to Los Angeles and last summer. So I live by Tangs Donuts in Silverflake and one night I saw WPH gearing up to go, and my friend Kendra had told me they were crazy so I figured the Stratos and I would give it a whirl. I got destroyed, crushed, smashed and dropped. But I kept coming back to ride, and ride and then really ride. Eventually after months and months I earned my spoke card. All of a sudden cycling became deeper to me than just a way to get coffee at Intelligencia.

Side note: No one would talk to me at first on WPH except Carlos Hurtado, he was the only other guy there who was riding fixed and could hang with the roadies.

Do you wear a helmet and why or why not?
It’s no secret that I fucking hate helmets. In skateboarding they were so awful and in bikes I no rikey how it looks and feels on me. But, – IF – you start riding a lot you start crashing out all the time so it’s mandatory to wear one unless your riding Griffith alone or going to a bar, then just wear a beanie, cuz if you show up wearing a helmet to a bar no one will talk to you.

Favorite Shop? Why?
Jairos LA in Eagle Snack cuz he sponsors me and Orange 20 cuz they have smart people working there like Omar and Geobbe who know everything, and Echo Park Cycles when the garage door is up.

Clip or clipless? Why?
Both. Showing up to a party in cleats and lycra is a death sentence. But if you’re riding and you want to make yourself puke the all natural way use clipless. I’ve seen party riders go barefoot down hills on fixies with no foot retention what so ever and crash the fu$k out so just use something.

Ride with headphones/ music?
Always headphones, except on group rides or races so I can hear my friends cursing at me to hold my line, hole, etc.

Sponsors or teams/ gangs/ clubs you are a part of?
Wolfpack Hustle, TRFKAS, BicyKillers, Cyclones, Fortune 700, Jairos’s LA and Sho Air — once they find me a baby girl size jersey.

Fav. Race(s)?

Fav. place to ride or route(s) in LA?

Dope Chill spot?
Cafecito Organico on Heliotrope — best coffee in LA duhh — Sunset Junction for lurking — The Smog Cutter and any bar in Echo park with a pool table but especially Little Joy.

Why LA?
My parents just asked me that. I dunno duddddde..

What do you do for work?
Def NOT.

What else do you do/ projects/ hobbies?
Lurk, drink coffee, read history, skateboard, insomnia, draw/sketch, NRA life member, net flix streaming, coast to coast am, animal rights, ebay, pool, chess and stress.

So I would look at some other blogs site & online mag’s to get ideal of it and I could remember seeing a trailers and edit of some guys riding bikes break-less without helmets in the rain in San Francisco bombing hills, hatching cars, wheelie almost a mile it was crazy. Later that year I went up to SF for some work & play and I stopped by the HUF store, I got some things and while paying for my thing and I see out the corner of my eye I see the MASH DVD set it came with a little Black Book and I’m reading some of it but mostly looking at the pictures and I see two Brothas, and I recall seeing in one of the trailers, Emi & Massen and I’m like, “wow man I got to get a bike”, when I got back home I got a bike & it was on.. x3 asfuk

Fish ‘n’ Chips Aka Dylan Hurst

While I big up the fast young kids, I can’t forget about the young guys killing the tarck bike game in LA
I love this kid. There isn’t much more to say, if you know Dylan, then you know he’s pretty rad.
Good style on FGFS tip. Smooth lines and bike control, someone needs to film this kid more.

Fish ‘n’ Chips

What do you ride?
- At the moment I ride a 2011 NS Analog, but plan to get a bigger frame soon.

How long have you been riding/ what started you?
- I picked up biking pretty easy as a young kid, but never really fell in love with it as I did skateboarding which I did until I was 13. I remember my dad started telling me about these cool, simplistic bikes called fixed gears that he had heard about, I really wanted to get one. That was in summer 2008, I started saving up money for my first fixed gear but didn’t have the complete bike until a week after new years, 2009.

Do you wear a helmet and why or why not?
- I don’t, I should, I will. eventually.

Favorite Shop? Why?
- My favorite shop is also my sponsor LABreakless. Since I have been going there they have done nothing but try their hardiest to get me on a bike. Its also the closest bike shop too me, so its a convenient hang out during the day.

Clip or clipless? Why?
- I rode/broke cages for a year then finally switched to FRS (holdfast, burro, reload) straps when they became available.

Ride with headphones/ music?
- If I have headphones that aint broken, they will be in my ears. I bump all different types of stuff, a lot of hip hop, trip hop, alternative, folk, electronic. Really depends what im in the mood for.

Sponsors or teams/ gangs/ clubs you are a part of?
- Currently I am sponsored by LAB, although I would like to work on getting a frame/strap sponsor.

Fav. Race(s)?
- The only race I ever participated in was the Wolf Pack All City race, it beat the shit out of me.

Fav. place to ride or route(s) in LA?
- I like riding all over LA, but I generally stay on the westside because I cant comfortably ride my bike anymore, Its too small for me so a long ride kills my knees/back. I love riding new cities too!, riding in London last summer was incredible. I just love exploring the streets.

Fav. person(s) to ride with?
- Nobody in particular, just people that love to ride.

Dope Chill spot?
- The Grind coffee shop next to LAB, there back patio is where it is at!

Why LA?
- My dads work moved us here in 2001 from London, I didn’t really have a choice.

What do you do for work?
- I am currently attending Independent studies so I can finish up highschool. In my free time I have been working at a Local preschool near my house and a Music studio in Venice.

What else do you do/ projects/ hobbies?
- I make music, beatbox, rhyme, play guitar, and sing. I create, draw, paint, sleep and eat.

Dream Bike?
- I have a couple builds that I have been dreaming about, I eventually want to own a road, touring, 24″mtn, BMX, and freak bike.

Best/ worst about riding in LA?
- Its flat, but spread out.

Any LA secrets/ tips you want to give out?
- Cars are more afraid then you should be of them, make your self noticeable, and hold your ground/line.

Shout outs?
LABrats, LDN, KeoCurry, BeaverBeavs, Anna, Dave, TOLA, PROLLY, all bike enthusiasts.

JTR

The Man, The Myth, The Legend. Some might say he is the underground king of Los Angeles Cycling, and Master of his world of Sanctioned Races. I say he is my friend, and a pretty rad dude, who can handle a bicycle a whole lot better then most. I have the utmost respect for JTR, and he deserves it. I could to go in to many reasons why, but I think this small interview will provide a glimpse into that. He seems to set the bar everywhere he goes, and he just set the bar with these answers. Enjoy!

What do you ride?
Specialized! Specialized! Specialized! No I don’t work for them, I’m just of the opinion that they make the finest bicycles in the world. And of course my opinion is the only one that counts;)
But to get into specifics
2011 Specialized SWorks Tarmac SL3
2010 Specialized SWorks Tarmac SL3
2003 Trek 5900. This is my first road bike. It’s what I used to get through the categories. It has more wins on it than all of my other bikes combined. I keep it because it’s always good to remember your first;)
2009 Nagasawa Track Bike. Because I like bikes and I’m febrile for stuff from that part of the world.
2004 Felt TK2. Because you need a track bike to do Lord or Griffith!!!
2003 Trek Fuel. Sometimes I like to get a little dirty.
2011 Giatex Ox. Someone gave it to me for taking some pictures with it.

And of course, your mother.

How long have you been riding/ what started you?
I had bmx bikes throughout my youth. Of course once I got a license I didn’t ride much anymore. I spent four years in Colorado and got a little into mountain biking but not too seriously as my main focus then was running competitively. Once I got out of the military I came back to California for grad school. Of course in grad school drinking seemed to be of greater importance than working out. A close friend and some family members started complaining about me changing from muscular to fat and lazy. So for a birthday present they bought me a nice mountain bike. I started riding and racing. My very good friend Carl introduced me to his younger brother Fritz who also raced mountain bikes. Fritz and I raced against each other frequently and for the life of me I could not beat him. I asked his secret and he told me he did most of his training on a road bike. So within a month I got a road bike. I started racing road almost immediately. I also started racing on the track. It was at this point riding really became an integrated part of my life.

Do you wear a helmet and why or why not?
I do wear a helmet. I’ve spent a substantial amount of time, money and effort filling my brain with information. I’d like to keep it in there. Also the idea of drinking all my meals through a straw does not sound appealing to me.

All joking aside, I spend a fair amount of time riding. As a result I’m a fairly competent bike handler. Even with all my competency I still crash. Some of my crashes have involved full on head impacts to the ground that have totally destroyed my helmet. I’m always thankful it’s my helmet that breaks and not my head.

Favorite Shop? Why?
Rock n Road Cyclery.

They sell the best bikes in the world. Specialized!!! They sponsor the best team in the world!!! Team Sho Air/Rock n Road!!! Sponsorships aside those shops are highly professional and the mechanical competence is unrivaled.

Of course I must mention an LA based favorite. Bike Effect in Santa Monica. Steven Carre is simply the best bike fitter around. You either buy nice or buy twice and getting fit by this guy you’re getting perfection. Larry Silva the head mechanic there is a wizard with the wrenches, so if your bike cost $20 or $20,000 it’s in good hands at this place.

Clip or clipless? Why?
I wasn’t aware there was anything other than clipless.

Ride with headphones/ music?
No music or head phones. I do live and ride in LA. HA! Riding in LA involves negotiating a substantial amount of traffic so I like to hear what’s going on around me.

I also like to focus on my own internal dialog. I find that to be far more entertaining than any song.

Sponsors or teams/ gangs/ clubs you are a part of?
Team Sho Air/Rock n Road

Fav. Race(s)?
Any that I win. Of course I also have some serious love in my heart for a few I can’t seem to win.

But to get down to specifics let’s start with the raw world of unsanctioned street racing. I have a serious addiction to anything Wolfpack Hustle hosts. And I have three straight years worth of tags to prove it. Of course I also have tons of love for Downtown LA’s Finest and the events they throw. And last but not least one of the most epic of street races, The Lord of Griffith!!! Mighty fine looking set of Phil’s you got there;)

Sanctioned races that I love:
LA Circuit Race
San Pedro Grand Prix
San Marcos Circuit Race
Ladera Ranch Grand Prix
Bakersfield Road State Champs course (I love this one times 2;)
San Clemente Criterium
San Luis Rey Road Race (I swear I will win this before I die.)

Fav. place to ride or route(s) in LA?
Honestly it’s not the street or scenery that makes a particular ride enjoyable for me. It’s always the people that make a ride special and memorable in my mind. So I’m down to ride anywhere and everywhere as long as I have good people to go with.

Fav. person(s) to ride with?
I honestly love riding with anyone and everyone. I help organize a ride on Wednesday nights called TRFKAS. My major hope for that ride is that it’s a welcoming environment for anyone who wants to throw their leg over a bike. So if you’re a person and you have a bike it would be great to ride with you!!! With that said, I do have one favorite;)

Dope Chill spot?
The Ritz-Carlton Club Lounge is nice.

Why LA?
The people!!! So much diversity.

What do you do for work?
I work for a large health care organization managing the outpatient portion of their electronic medical record system. Don’t mess with me people!!! I’m clearly a badass!

What else do you do/ projects/ hobbies?
I ride bikes.

Dream Bike?
I’m living the dream. Anything Specialized S-Works is a dream come true.

Best/ worst about riding in LA?
The best thing about riding in LA is the variety of people you can do it with. The worst thing is all the damn cars!!!

Any LA secrets/ tips you want to give out?
Burn your car. Ride your bike more.

Shout outs?
To everyone that I know, you mean so much. To those that I don’t know, come ride with me!!!

Why do you think Sean Martin is so loved by women and revered by men?
It has to be those ginger locks.

Last word?
I love you all!!!

Fabian Vazquez

Fabian Vazquez, another one of those young beasts that LA is producing right now. I have watched this young man in the last year go from geeky on the bike to getting 2nd Road, 4th overall in the Wolfpack Crash race this past weekend. Then he went home napped, got up and raced in Sanctioned race. What did I do? Rode home and slept all day. Ya’ll need to really watch out for all of these young guys, I’m talking about, they will be LA’s cycling future. I expect big things from Fabian and his stable of bikes.

What do you ride?
Lately I have been riding my Tarmac sl2 alot. But my stable consists of a Specialized Allez, All City Nature Boy, and Surly Steamroller.

How long have you been riding/ what started you?
I started road biking when I was about 13 with my dad. I really got into skating when I started highschool though. In 2007 I started using my old road bike again just ride around. That year a local bike shop (echo park cycles) had recently opened up and i ended up picking up a surly steamroller from there. The rest is history. I Still love that bike dearly.

Do you wear a helmet and why or why not?
I always wear a helmet. I have already crashed twice wear the helmet saved my life.

Favorite Shop? Why?
Echo Park Cycles hands down. They taught me how to wrench and I really absorbed alot of info on just the general lifestyle of riding in LA. I wouldnt be the rider I am today without them.

Clip or clipless?
Clipless. I use my road bike shoes alot. I have a pair of MTB shoes that I hardly use. But theres really nothing that compares to the feeling of being directly connected to each pedal stroke.

Ride with headphones/ music?
Nah. There is enough stimuli coming in through the outside that I dont usually get bored.

Sponsors or teams/ gangs/ clubs you are a part of?
I ride for the Jr Sho Air team.

Fav. Race?
I have a few. Street races: Wolfpack crash race, Urban cyclocross race, Stairway to Heaven race, SB to SM, and Vuelta De LA. Sanctioned races: I had the most fun in the Callville stage race. The Nevada desert is completely desolate and beautiful at the same time.

Fav. place to ride or route(s) in LA?
Griffith frontside, backside, and side to side.

Fav. person(s) to ride with?
The Ride Formally Known as Silverlake Ride

Dope Chill spot?
Tangs 2AM

Why LA?
I was born and raised. I have never regretted that.

What do you do for work?
When I was little I used to help my mom sell purses at the echo park lake. I used to do Catering in highschool. I did installation and maintenance at Fox Studios. But I also used to sell weed at my highschool. But right now I just go to Santa monica College. haha

What else do you do/ projects/ hobbies?
I like to doodle sometimes. But I play in a band called the Mel Brooks. Come to our next show!

Dream Bike?
A flying unicorn that runs on peaches and fires carbon rainbows at my enemies. (also a custom Mothattack track bike would be nice)

Best/ worst about riding in LA?
The people/The people.

Any LA secrets/ tips you want to give out?

My dude, Simon Lee. The most laid back cat, you will ever meet. Quick to bust your ass with a gif, you are caught slipping on the interwebz, but just as quick to hit with you one to make you smile and laugh. It seems to me that Simon does everything for the Lulz. I really like that in Si, he just wants to laugh and have a good time. We need more folks like this in our lives, and I’m stoked to have this guy in mine.

Danielle Marie

The Homegirl Danielle, will race the shit out of you. The first time I rode/ raced with her was on Wolfpack All-city lll. I saw this rider up ahead just blasting by guys, sprinting, racing all out. I was like you gotta catch up and work with racer. I caught up realized it was Danielle and we just took off really working well together. Then the next time we raced, she helped me win the VCR thanksgiving Alleycat, by doing the same shit, and giving a really good route. I wish I would ride more with her, and see her more. Not only is she super fun to ride with, she also is a blast to kick it with, shit talking the whole time, and giving you the best advice while doing so.

Riccardo Stanley Mejia

We almost didn’t have a Monday profile today. I have been pestering Riccardo all day about getting me the answers. He finally finished. Thank god. Hahaha. Seriously though I am very proud of this kid and how fast he has taken to riding bikes. I love to see him at races, and I always want him to win (unless I’m racing, of course). He is part of this next generation of LA cyclists, coming up from the streets, and that are gonna be killing it on every style of bike they touch, but also working on creating a better cycling city for LA. Everyone should take note and watch out. I will be right there cheering them on. Keep it up Riccardo, you are the future and I think it is in good hands.

Riccardo Stanley Mejia

What do you ride?
Depending on the type or ride or race I do, I use a specific bike. For the track races I ride a Fuji Track Comp ’09. For a road race I ride a Specialized Roubaix(pro) or a Giant TCR. During the Cycle Cross season I ride a Bianchi San Jose and for the trails I ride a Redline Monocog.

How long have you been riding/ what started you?
I’ve been riding for 3 years. My neighbor was a track racer back in his early years. He let me ride his track bike and fell in love with the mechanics of the bikes. I looked online for youth programs and joined The Connie Cycling at the ADT Velodrome in Carson, which was free. I did that for about a year and then focused on street and sanctioned races.

Do you wear a helmet and why or why not?

Orange 20, Golden Saddle Cyclery and Echo Park Cycles because I like to support my local bike shop.

Dream Bike?
Bridgestone XO-1

Best/ worst about riding in LA?
The best about riding in LA is that you can ride to any part of the city and connect with different cultures and eat a bunch of different foods. Also, the weather is beautiful and there is diversity in the environments you can ride through like the mountains, beach, and inner-city. However, the worst things about riding in this city are the bad road conditions, traffic, pollution, and road rage.

Any LA secrets/ tips you want to give out?
It doesn’t get any easier, you just get faster!

Shout outs?
The hard workers at Orange 20, Sean Martin, Carlos, Eyeball, Ash, JTR, the Z brothers, Juan, Kyle Kelly, Stryker LA, Bud, Judee, UCRosko, Fumaz, and to all the people that promote the cycling culture.

2010 Affinty Lo-pro with some fancy components
Univega Internal 3 speed mixte until the the owner picks it up.

How long have you been riding/ what started you?
8+ years. I had a Bmx for bar hopping in Seattle, then my sister invited me down to Portland for the Westside invite, in 2002 or 2004, don’t remember. I brought the Bmx and spent the weekend chasing my sister, Ben and DTLA messengers all over Portland on said Bmx, it really sucked in a fun way, but was an eye opener into Bike culture, races, games, people, etc. I went back to Seattle sold the Bmx, got a road bike and never looked back. Thanks Kelly!

Do you wear a helmet and why or why not?
I wear a helmet commuting and when I race. If I’m chilling, it’s one of my many hats. (I have a hat problem)

Favorite Shop? Why?
O20. Close to home, homies work there, homies own it. Most everyone I know goes there or works or lives around it. So any time you go to the bike block, you’ll see a gang of fools you know. Plus Scoops is across the street. Pushbike in SF, cause Sarah lets us have beers there.

Clip or clipless?
Both. One for chilling, one for going fast. Guess which…

Justin Kizzart

I am back. What a trip. More on that later. What better way to start the the New Year Profiles then with someone who will be taking over in the 2011. Justin, my homeboy. If you don’t now his brand Knice, then get up on your game, son. I expect big things from my dude this year. Not only from his brand, but from the man himself. Race hard, my friend, the world is watching.

Justin Kizzart

What do you ride?
Langster Tokyo for the last 2 ½ years, but I miss my steel, UNI VEGA…that piece of shit was my fun in the sun for awhile.

How long have you been riding/ what started you?
As any dude, I have been loving my bike since I was kid. Growing up in Texas pre-nintendo era biking with the kids in the neighborhood was the bizness. But the love/freedom crept back in my life again around 06’ and has grown into an obsession/lifestyle choice

Do you wear a helmet and why or why not?
I don’t but I should. I just have a big ass chrome dome and dreads. That’s probably not a good reason but it honestly is the only reason I don’t rock one.

Favorite Shop? Why?
That’s a tuff one…might have to roll with El Maestro’s in DTLA. They been holding me down for years…hooked it up on parts when I was flat broke and messenging part time for random companies in the fashion district (not a fun time).

I fought clipless for a long time, but I get it now.

Ride with headphones/ music?
Skully boom…I NEVER where headphones…sensory deprivation is not the bizness.

Lo Key

Dope Chill spot?
Bar 107…used to be Origami for the cheap shrimp taco and $2 beers but that got shut down.

Why LA?
This city got its hooks in me. I like that it’s not a 1 note town. There’s beauty underneath the shitty air and Hollywood duche baggery.

I design an urban cycling apparel line called J. knice clothing. I also do production management/color seperation for a screen printing company.

What else do you do/ projects/ hobbies?
I play double dutch with chinese kids.

Dream Bike?
A USA hand made steel frame with Phil Wood components, for a while I drooled over the 1st place winning frame in the 2006 NA Hand Made Bike Show. I just like anything that someone put a soul into. Plus I like America.

Best/ worst about riding in LA?
Best – you can get anywhere faster than a car.
Worst – BIKE PIRATES!!!

Any LA secrets/ tips you want to give out?

Adan Hernandez

Adan, my brother. I have known this guy for over half my life, we have been to the brink and back. So many war stories, so many Lulz, we have seen and done things that would make a normal man go insane. Coming home for the holidays, I wanted Adan for the Monday profile. He as amassed a wicked Schwinn collection, and rides all year round. Snow tires for the winter, slicks for the summer. My old faithful friend, who has been there, for so many of us Alaskans throughout the years. He’s the best, even though we don’t get to see each other very much, when we do it’s like time stood still. If you ever make it up to AK, be sure to go to Oscar’s Taco Grande, the only Taco truck in Anchorage. You will not be let down. I have the pleasure to fly down to Seattle with my friend, for NYE, and there really no one else I would want to be traveling with. Seattle, watch the fuck out. Trouble is coming.

Favorite Shop? Why?
Big shout to Off the Chain Bike Co-Op. So good for the community. But as far as traditional shops go I”m givin it up to The Bicycle Shop the original ANC bike store there are places that have fancier stuff but got nothing but love for the guys who won’t bend you over to true a wheel.

Juan Gutierrez

Juan is a Hater. In a good way. He makes me see what is real and what ain’t. He calls it like he sees it, with no mercy. It’s awesome. Juan and his equally rad lady Gabby were the first people I rode with in LA. On some MR halloween ride in the first few weeks I had moved here. I think I was the only one with my face painted, (like King Diamond) then a few weeks later I tried to host this photo scanvenger hunt ride/ race, and Juan, Gabby and Armando were the only ones to show up. We went drinking instead of doing the ride/ race. We realized later that we had met on the halloween ride and I was the Kook with my face painted. Juan, is one of the best dudes to have in your corner, he has saved my ass more times then I can remember, in many different ways. A ride or die homie, that loves and hates bikes more then anyone else I know. Enjoy.

Lil Hern. One of the fastest dudes in LA. I have raced and lost against this guy more times then I would like to count. Solid rider, on any bike, you put him on. Makes me happy to see him race at the Velo, and racing Cross this fall/ winter. I expect big things from Hern in the next year. He’s really put LA on the Map as far as fast goes in the street racing world and I hope he continues to dominate, in the racing world of gears and banked walls. Jennifer Shulkin aka Jennifriend etc

A little bit go, I started noticing this tiny girl showing up at various events, with one or more of my friends. Super talkative, very attentive to the conversations, and always has some funny shit to add or rad stories to compete with our “witty banter”. Any girl that can hang out with us, and not be disgusted or turned away by the shit we say or do and still want to hang out, while holding her own, is amazing in my book. Plus she can wield a bike like a sword. I’m excited every time she races (kicking ass at Cross), and really can’t wait for summer to witness her stomp the competition. Jenny makes me want to go explore Chicago, only if she was there with me. Road Trip? I’m happy to have gotten to know her, and hope my own baby behavior doesn’t bother her too much.

Jennifer Shulkin aka Jennifriend etc. aka BabyNerd

What do you ride?
Fuji Track
Redline Conquest Pro Cyclocross (with slicks when I’m riding road)
Harry Havnoonian Jr Track Bike work-in-progress.

How long have you been riding/ what started you?
I started riding back in the day when I moved to Chicago. I’m a bad driver, walking bores me, and the subway in Chicago smells… so it seemed the best way to get around the city.

Do you wear a helmet and why or why not?
Yes I DO! Why? A promise to my mama.

Favorite Shop? Why?
Orange 20. When I moved to LA O20 became more of a family to me than a shop. Except they are not Jewish, and don’t tell at me as much about finding a boyfriend and calling my grandfather.

Clip or clipless?
This week clipless, but I always switch it up. And you will never spot me walking in cleats. Mostly cause I’m a girl and I like shoes.

Ride with headphones/ music?
I generally listen to books on tape (this is completely untrue… but how cool would that be?). I like to keep my ears open to the bells and whistles of the city.

Sponsors or teams/ gangs/ clubs you are a part of?
Orange 20 (The Juice), CBNC, Team Pegasus, Team Wigwam

Fav. Race?
Cyclocross… any time any place.

Fav. place to ride or route(s) in LA?
I’d love to say Griffith Park or Mulloland Drive, but what I enjoy the most is riding around DTLA, especially at night. Reminds me of riding back home in Chicago, less the smell of diesel fuel and hot dogs.

Fav. person(s) to ride with?
My friends, especially when we are going on adventures.

Dope Chill spot?
The Ronin Gallery/Scoops/My Bed

Why LA?
I moved to LA a few months back from Chicago. Chicago is where you will find my home and heart, but I’m loving LA. I wanted to get serious about being a trainer, and when the most well known gym in the world offered me a job, I packed up the cats and headed west.

What do you do for work?
I’m a personal trainer at Gold’s Gym Hollywood. I love my job.

What else do you do/ projects/ hobbies?
Being a friend. Being a baby.

Dream Bike?
A custom road bike built by Aaron at Six-Eleven Bicycle Co.

Best/ worst about riding in LA?
LA is stunning. I love the weather and the terrain, but I miss the heartbeat of Chicago. To be honest, I’m still looking for the pulse of LA.

Any LA secrets/ tips you want to give out?
Assume that the driver in the car next to you is text messaging something SUPER IMPORTANT and does not know you are there.

Shout outs?
I think all my friends know who they are, I tell them all the time. If you’re not in LA… Come visit me!! And mostly to my mom, who after 2,015 miles, 6 tattoos, and zero Jewish boyfriends still manages to find a way to be proud of me.

Last word?
Newp, babies don’t talk.

Ace Carretero

The Boogie Monster. I love my dude. Forever cracking jokes and spinning spokes. haha. Seriously, Ace pushes me. One of the hardest working guys I know. We get into it sometimes, but it’s always for the best. Chin Checking, I love it, it makes me want to be better and work harder. I thank him so much for introducing me to the Nerd Crew, and letting me get down. This is what I call Family, and I’m happy that Ace is core member of mine. CNBC.

what do you ride?
1 track, 1 road
Toyo Godzilla with Sugino/EAI drive train
Mavic CXP12>Phil Wood HF 32h
Thomson Bits

Kelly Road Bike
Built with Red
Miss Matching Mavic wheels
Thomson/Easton Bits

How long have you been riding/ what started you?
I’ve been riding since 2005 and what started me was riding to work on my 24” bmx cruiser. As a kid I always wanted an Elf BMX bike. After saving up some money i was determined to get it. My exposure to track bike was seeing my co-workers ride a type of bike that was impractical. As a joke they told me I wouldn’t be able to ride that type of bike, and i wanted to prove to my self i could do it.

Do you wear a helmet and why or why not?
Yes. I wear a helmet because the first time I used it for it’s intended purpose, It felt like my head hit a pillow when I fell. “what do ya know, they do work.” At that point I was convinced.

Favorite Shop? Why? Orange 20 Bikes.
I built my first bike entirely from parts that they suggested to me back in 2006. I honestly don’t feel comfortable buying from anyone else.

Clip or clipless on a Track bike in the Streets?
It all depends on the riding conditions. Commuting/Cruising with my friends the choice is obvious, Clips. On more challenging rides I opt for clipless because of the efficiency.

Ride with headphones/ music?
In the city where there are cars as obstacles, I like to be alert so no headphones. If I’m doing a particularly long ride in more remote areas i’ll put the shuffle on to keep my mind off how much I’m hurting.

Sponsors or teams/ gangs/ clubs you are a part of?

Devon Tsuno

Devon. When I first came up with doing these profiles, Devon was on the short list to be amongst the first. He’s the raddest, always with a smile and quick wit, takes amazing photos, a very talented artist, and all around great guy. Whenever ever I have had beef in the community, online or in person, Devon is always the first one to to hit me up later and give me those words of encouragement that I need and has something funny to say, to snap me back out of that funk. I thank him for that, and look to forward to our first encounter on the track. Thanks Devon, you’re the best. Interview after the jump.

ZACH KAHL

Recently, I have been getting back in touch with Zach and Megan (Megan, where are your photo’s and answers?). Two of my favorites, that moved to Chicago, to be in love and what ever else one does in Chicago. So I thought I would give them both a moment, and tell us what is up with Chi-Town and how they ride. (Megan, it’s your turn)
ZACH KAHL – 26 Years of Age – Chicago

What do you ride?
Custom Waterford Velo Track, thanks Orange 20. Dura Ace drivetrain down low, Nitto on top, Crane brass bell, DA>Mavic OP rear with Rando, Suzue Promax>Deep V with RiBMo front, Rolls Saddle.

How long have you been riding/ what started you?
Been riding bikes my whole life, non stop. BMX as a kid, then MTB until 2008, when I began track bike riding in the city. All I ride on the street is my track bike, Ridley Xride cross bike for racing fun.

Do you wear a helmet and why or why not?
I always wear one, no matter the distance or type of ride. I feel like those who wear helmets look serious and much more respectable. Being hit by cars and hitting parked cars myself helps keep the helmet on, as well. Kids, please wear a helmet and look good doing what you love.

Favorite Shop? Why?
Orange 20 in LA. They helped me out through a total of four bikes. The guys and girls there are honest and inviting. The shop is a place to not only find any part you could be looking for, but it also gives a safe place for cyclists to meet and just hang out. Beers in the fridge and smiles at the register. Yojimbo’s Garage here in Chi. Marcus is a super super good mechanic and has set his roots here in the city. The shop has peculiar hours and an interesting location, but is incredibly comfortable once you get inside! Sean, check this place out when you get to Chicago; there are 2 shop cats that you will absolutely love.

Clip or clipless?
Clipless, mtb specific. Time ATAC Carbons with Specialized S-Works shoes make me a very happy boy.

Ride with headphones/ music?
I ride with music (right ear only, low volume) always, except when racing or riding home from the bar. Safety first when you need to be using all those senses!

Sponsors or teams/ gangs/ clubs you are a part of?
No sponsors. Sunnyvale Cycling Team here in Chicago. Shout out to Eric G. and Andrew D. for racing hard alongside and in front of me!

Fav. Race?
Crash the LA Marathon race, Los Angeles. Chicago Cyclocross Cup, Chicago.

Fav. place to ride or route(s) in Chicago?
Regular rides up Halsted/Milwaukee/Damen/North/Clyborn/Grand, West and South Loop. Hustling southbound on Michigan from Walton to Roosevelt if I want to play in traffic and really get the blood flowing.

Fav. person to ride with?
Eric Grzeskowiak, hands down.

Dope Chill spot?
Any Polish bars in the west loop for dives. Paramount Room or Map Room for beers.

Why Chicago?
The people are midwest friendly, the opinions are honest, the bars are plentiful, the weather is brutal, the riding is incredible and fast.

What do you do for work?
Sell quality gear at The North Face. Freelance sound mixer and editor when I want to mix it up (no pun intended).

What else do you do/ projects/ hobbies?
I like to read, paint walls, make/listen to music, build bikes, and write. Most of all, I love hanging with friends and having a laugh; this makes my world go ’round.

Dream Bike?
Canyon Ultimate CF SLX EVO frameset, SRAM Red, Mavic Carbone Wheelset.

Best/ worst about riding in Chicago?
Best thing is the area is small and super easy to navigate thanks to the streetgrid. Worst thing is the wind, it comes at you in every direction and blasts you in the face in the winter.

Any Chicago secrets/ tips you want to give out?
I have no secrets, only revelations. Watch out for potholes!

Shout outs?
Sunnyvale!, Sean and Joe at TOLA, Anthony, Colt, Simon Lee, Ace, Tracko, Avo, Beavs, O20, Stumpe, Montana Mafia, my girl Megan, my parents, and the city of Chicago.

Last word?
People make mistakes, people get caught up with life; give them that respect and understanding, stop hating and keep an honest head on your shoulders. Lastly, never stop creating.
